Tehran and Beijing have held a high-level municipal meeting in which both sides explored a broad spectrum of cooperation opportunities—from metro infrastructure and smart-city development to cultural exchanges and investment—while reaffirming their shared commitment to turning strategic dialogue into tangible outcomes.
During the session at the Tehran Municipality, Mayor Alireza Zakani and Chinese Ambassador Cong Peiwu engaged in detailed discussions on deepening bilateral urban-management ties. Both parties reviewed existing partnerships, including the ongoing metro-wagon supply contract, and collectively explored ways to accelerate project implementation.
Joint Exploration Across Multiple Sectors
The two sides discussed cooperation in areas ranging from public transportation and electrification of the fleet to renovation of aging urban fabrics, model township construction, energy efficiency, environmental protection, water management, tourism, health, education, and comprehensive municipal governance. They also exchanged views on smart-city technologies and infrastructure modernization, identifying several new avenues for joint pilot projects.
Ambassador Cong shared China's experience in large-scale urban development and expressed interest in expanding municipal-level collaborations beyond Tehran—including potential partnerships with Shanghai, Guangzhou, and other major Chinese cities. Mayor Zakani, in turn, presented Tehran's current urban achievements and outlined the municipality's strategic vision for "Look East" policy implementation, inviting Chinese companies and experts to participate actively in the capital's renewal.
Focus on Metro Wagon Project
A significant portion of the discussions centered on the metro-carriage contract. Both sides reviewed the status of the agreement, acknowledged the progress made so far, and explored practical solutions to expedite deliveries. The municipality's domestic commitments were noted, while the Chinese side assured that it would convey all relevant points to Beijing and encourage its firms to fulfill their obligations promptly.
Shared Commitments Going Forward
The two delegations also exchanged views on removing administrative and logistical hurdles, with both expressing a strong desire to maintain regular consultations. They jointly emphasized the importance of sustained follow-up mechanisms and strategic coordination to ensure that mutual interests are served effectively.
At the close of the meeting, the CEO of Tehran Wagon Manufacturing Company provided a technical briefing, after which both sides concurred on continuing dialogue, monitoring project milestones, and deepening cooperation across all discussed fields. The talks were described as constructive, forward-looking, and reflective of the robust strategic partnership between the two nations.
