Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh sharply criticized the United States for its move toward a global order based on force and intimidation, asserting that Washington’s actions undermine international security and human rights.
He made the remarks on Thursday during a meeting with representatives of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states at the United Nations headquarters.
“The United States has demonstrated a lack of fidelity to the path of diplomacy, consistently sacrificing dialogue and engagement for a policy of pressure, threats, and destabilization,” Khatibzadeh said.
He further warned that a dangerous trend is emerging, with certain actors, particularly the US, seeking to weaken established international norms and replace them with a system predicated on coercion and the exercise of power. “The consequences of this trend will affect all countries, especially independent and developing nations,” he added.
Khatibzadeh accused the US of unilateralism, asserting that it has not only eroded mutual trust but also fueled insecurity and instability at both the regional and international levels.
The deputy minister also outlined the complexities surrounding recent developments in Iran, stressing that mainstream media, “led by Israel and the United States,” are engaged in a “comprehensive disinformation campaign” aimed at creating a pretext for foreign intervention.
Iran experienced widespread economic protests in early 2026, which escalated into violence, resulting in thousands of casualties. Iranian officials have explained that of US- and Israel-backed terrorist groups got involved in the protests, prompting a security response.
Khatibzadeh highlighted a distinction between peaceful demonstrations and violent acts, stating that Iran recognizes the public’s right to express legitimate grievances. However, he condemned foreign meddling and the manipulation of terrorist groups aimed at undermining national stability and security.
