Iran, Russia Reaffirm Strategic Partnership at Turkmenistan Summit

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin met Friday on the sidelines of the International Conference on Peace and Trust in Turkmenistan, underscoring the growing depth of Tehran-Moscow relations and pledging to accelerate implementation of their 20-year strategic cooperation agreement.

Pezeshkian expressed satisfaction with the “very positive and expanding” ties between the two nations, thanking Russia for its consistent support of the Islamic Republic in international forums.

He stressed Iran’s determination to fully operationalize the comprehensive strategic pact signed in Moscow on January 17, 2025, which covers wide-ranging cooperation in political, economic, military, cultural, scientific, and sports fields.

Putin, in turn, highlighted the close coordination between the two countries on global issues, stressing that Russia has “always supported Iran at the United Nations and will continue to do so.” He described the signing of the 20-year agreement as a “turning point in bilateral relations and a highly significant event.”

Pezeshkian noted that joint projects in power generation, transportation, and transit corridors are already underway, with Iran preparing the groundwork for full implementation of corridor initiatives. He urged Russia to expedite its commitments, particularly in the development of the North-South and East-West corridors, which he called “strategic projects.”

The Iranian president also underscored the importance of cooperation through multilateral platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS, saying joint efforts are essential to counter unilateralism.

Putin pointed to robust trade growth, noting that bilateral commerce rose 13% last year and another 8% in the first nine months of 2025. He confirmed that collaboration in power generation and infrastructure development will continue, with discussions underway on gas and electricity transfers to Iran.
